Mainly because it constantly reminded itself of the main problem of many sequels – secondary. Art Deco, Jazz, Rapture – it all happened before. The impressions of “Bioshock” have faded into memory and are covered with a thin crust of nostalgia. The latest news about the second part, videos from BioShock 2 They didn’t force you to experience half-forgotten sensations or experience new emotions – they just pleasantly tickled that very crust of memories. And now that the release has taken place, we can finally find out whether BioShock 2 claim the laurels of an excellent sequel. Like, for example, Fallout 2 among games or “Terminator 2” in the world of cinema.
Almost ten years have passed since the end of the first part. Over the past years, the underwater city has hardly changed externally, but inside it has changed a lot. The massive domes could not withstand the careless handling of local residents and the pressure of water, so that only professional scuba divers can now reach other areas of Rapture. And the deficit of Adam did not benefit the metropolis. Without this superdrug, many inhabitants who previously retained human traits became completely brutal and carried out a real massacre on the streets. Luckily for them, those who won the fight for survival would soon receive a gift. The city was once again populated by the Little Sisters, peculiar walking factories for the production of Adam. How did they end up in Rapture?? Who and, most importantly, why suddenly needed to revive the city? Here’s what we need to find out.
If you, having read the previous paragraph, became interested and decided to immediately familiarize yourself with BioShock 2, then you will be disappointed. Actually, we have already retold the most interesting thing, that is, the background of the scenario, but there is nothing else interesting in this story. After the spectacular video at the beginning, only melancholy and boredom await us. The entertainment will only last for a few minutes, the intrigue will not last even an hour, and a competent presentation has gone bad already a year before the project’s release. And they didn’t bring any charismatic characters. The main villain is remembered only for her almost standard stereotypedness and facelessness, and the rest cannot boast of this either. While, for example, the manic Cohen from the original is still firmly in the memory.

We again travel through the levels, fight with mutants and listen to wonderful retro music… But damn it, this is a sequel! Why is the changelog so small?? What, you don’t believe me? Let’s count together – bend your fingers.
Firstly, from now on we are not controlled by anyone, but by the most powerful Big Daddy, the best example. In general, in fact, the change of ward did not produce any significant innovations. Is it that the Little Sisters, who need to be taken away from our armored colleagues, now play a more important role. We can not only gut/set Little Sister free, but also “adopt” her – then the main character will take the young creature in his arms and carry her with him everywhere. The cooperation turns out to be quite mutually beneficial – the girl receives our care, and we receive Adam. His baby obediently pumps out of corpses. By the way, since Sis becomes a particularly tempting target for enemies during the collection of the drug, we must protect her. In the first part, such episodes were rare and exciting, but in the sequel the developers clearly went too far. The mutagen has to be extracted regularly, which is why entertainment turns almost into work, boring and monotonous. Of course, you have the right to refuse to collect Adam, but then you will deeply regret it. There is no precious substance – you won’t be able to buy improvements from vending machines, which are very important for a comfortable passage without every minute “restarts”.
Secondly, since many areas of Rapture have been flooded for ten years, sometimes we have to walk on the ocean floor. It turned out quite, as they say, meditative. Calming music is playing, schools of colored fish and beautiful algae are swimming around – here we take a break from the fighting. Such travel is very relaxing: there is no need to look around and constantly prepare for battle – we are safe outside the protective domes.
Thirdly… thirdly… ok, here we will write down all the minor changes. Let’s say the authors have simplified the process of hacking bots and turrets. A simple arcade game like Pipe Dream has given way to a “press the button at the right moment” finger trainer. In addition, from now on we are allowed to use “magic” (that is, plasmids) and shoot at the same time. Well, we also have a new enemy – Big Sister. This is practically the same Big Daddy, but with a couple of advantages – a lady in an armored suit uses plasmids and jumps deftly, as a result of which she “eats” more first aid kits than the overweight and clumsy Big Daddy.
By the way, we didn’t mention the multiplayer mode for a reason – it’s so flawed that it doesn’t deserve attention. We have already suffered through “lags”, problems with finding rivals and other “joys” (may you die, hated IWNet). Moreover, pleasant surprises do not await those who are especially persistent, those who overcome these difficulties. A set of banal modes plus a bunch of unrealized possibilities is just a dummy.
By God, there’s nothing more to say about today’s guest – we risk repeating what was in the original review. Of course, despite the weak plot and the controversial title of the sequel, BioShock 2 – still a very entertaining action movie. But you expect something a little different from the sequel to the best game of 2007, right??
Pros: the atmosphere of “Bioshock” is conveyed flawlessly; walks along the ocean floor are relaxing and pleasing to the eye; exploring levels and exterminating mutants is still interesting.
Cons: two and a half lame innovations; no plot and inexpressive characters; It’s a shame to put the project on the same shelf as BioShock – we’re looking at just a tastefully designed linear action movie for one or two playthroughs.
